The mission of Arbutus Folk School is to enrich lives and build community through joyful, hands-on learning with master artisans. Members of our board help to further this mission by providing leadership, accountability, planning, and advocacy to help the organization achieve its goals. The board of directors meets virtually once per month, with a time commitment of approximately 4 hours each month. Applications to join the board are accepted on a rolling basis.
The Strategic Plan for Arbutus Folk School’s next three years focuses on increasing access to our programs, expanding our positive impact, improving financial stability, and creating more efficient systems for our operations. We are seeking stronger connections to local artists and culture bearers, assessing how arts and craft can meet our community’s most pressing needs, and exploring new directions for our programming, our physical space, and our community outreach.
Access to and opportunities in the arts are often disproportionately available to privileged people groups, neglecting the full spectrum of cultural assets and needs in our communities. In our mission to enrich, empower, and connect through the arts, we especially encourage leaders and creatives who are people of color, people who live in rural areas, people with disabilities, women, immigrants, people whose first language is not English, and LGBTQ people to consider applying to our board of directors.
